Our History...The Assemblies of God...

The Assemblies of God operates on a world-wide basis.  We came into being as a result of a small convention in Hot Springs, Arkansas, April 2-12, 1914.   At this gathering, some 120 pastors and evangelists registered as delegates of a new 'cooperative fellowship' (each church retaining its autonomy, yet choosing to work together synergistically), representing 20 states and several foreign lands.

The events leading up to the 1914 "official" date of the AG organization actually began about 20 years earlier.  In the latter part of the nineteenth century, a spirit of revival swept the world.  This caused a deep spiritual hunger among many Believers.  The spiritual temperature began to rise, and 'prayer bands' began to meet all over the world.   Bible conferences were held and much was written about the condition of the Christian Church.

God responded to these cries for revival and poured out His Spirit in much the same way He did on the Day of Pentecost recorded in Acts 2:4.  The distinctive feature of this turn-of-the-century movement was the reoccurrence  of glossolalia - the gift of speaking in languages that were not learned by natural means.   On January 1, 1901, God poured out His Spirit in this special way on students at Bethel Bible College in Topeka, Kansas.   The movement spread through Kansas, Missouri, and Texas, and in 1906 to a Mission on Azusa Street in Los Angeles.

The five basic reasons for creating the "General Council of Assembly of God Churches" were:

    1)  To achieve better understanding and unity of doctrine.

    2)  To know how to conserve God's work at home and abroad.

    3)  To consult on protection of funds for missionary endeavors.

    4)  To explore the possibilities of chartering churches under a legal name.

    5)  To consider the establishment of a Bible training school with a  literary division.

Our Heritage-Pacific Christian Center...

It was 1937 when Pastor Charles Dobbins came to Santa Maria... and First Assembly of God of Santa Maria was born.  During the ensuing years, the church has been served by pastors:  Charles Dobbins, Tom Ming, L.E. Halvorson, Malcum E. Edmundson, C.J. Brown, James W. Dollins, E.J. Kumpe, Harris Lidstrand, Norman Field, Jerry Clark, Lloyd Huf, Timothy Lake, Robert E. Palmer, Ben Ellsworth and our current pastor, Richard Bloom.

The church relocated four times as it grew.  It is presently in beautiful new facilities on 12 1/2 acres on Santa Maria Way, a stone's throw from the freeway.  To reflect the growing vision and purpose of the church, the name was recently changed to Pacific Christian Center.

One of the outstanding ministries of the church has been a ministry to families with children by providing a Preschool.  Eventually, an elementary school developed, adding Junior High in 1996, allowing us to minister to approximately 500 children each week!

Pacific Christian Center is a growing church.  Ministries are multiplying to meet our needs and the needs of the growing Santa Maria area.    We look forward to many more years of ministry here, extending the love, grace and hope of our Lord.

We Believe...

4 The Bible is the inspired and only infallible and authoritative Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16).

4 There is one God, eternally existent in three persons:  God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost (2 Corinthians 13:14).

4 In the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal future return to this in power and glory to rule a thousand years (Matthew 16:16; 1 Corinthians 15:3,4).

4 In the blessed hope, which is the rapture of the Church, at Christ's coming (Titus 2:13).

4 The only means of being cleansed from sin is through repentance and faith in the precious blood of Christ (1 Peter 1:18,19).

4 Regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for personal salvation (John 3:3-5).

4 The redemptive work of Christ on the cross provides healing of the human body answers in answer to believing prayer (1 Peter 2:24).

4 The baptism of the Holy Spirit, according to Acts 2:4, is given to believers who ask for it (Acts 2:39).

4 In the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a holy life (Galatians 5:16).

4 In the resurrection of both the saved and the lost, the one to everlasting life and the other to everlasting damnation (John 5:28,29).
